The full-size tournament style Grandmaster chessmen with 4" King are hand carved by master artisans from high grade woods. The pieces are heavily weighted for a superb chess playing experience and beautifully finished complete with a luxurious billiard felt base. The robust design can withstand rigorous chess games with no delicate points to break or chip.

These Grandmaster chessmen truly combine finesse and function - elegance amid frequent chess matches.

Ebonized Boxwood is created when Boxwood is specially stained to the black appearance similar to the desirable Ebony wood. This is ideal for those who like the black contrast at a reasonable price. The light pieces are finished in clear-stain Boxwood as with most sets of chess pieces.

Balance of elegance and playability

I've wanted a tournament set made of wood for a while now, but I found sets that were either too elegant/expensive to feel comfortable using, or sets that were so basic they were ugly to me.

This set strikes the balance: it's very pleasant to look at and yet feels durable. I'm not concerned about the pieces being handled or dropped. (Having the ability to buy replacement pieces adds to the piece of mind).

I only have two minor points to nitpick. 1) I think more weight in the pieces would be ideal.
2) I believe the king is taller than necessary or desirable compared to the rest of the pieces. Visually it looks unbalanced, and I've already seen players accidentally hit the king when reaching for other pieces.

Not just a nice set for the price point, but a nice set period, It will replace my plastic OTB Tournament set.

Beautiful pieces

We got this set to go with our walnut chess table, also from Chesshouse. The pieces go beautifully with the table and are an excellent fit for the 2 1/4 inch squares. They also have a nice feel with their weighting. Highly recommend.
