About The Queen for a Day: The Girl's Guide to Chess Mastery - Goodkind

Queen For a Day: The Girl’s Guide to Chess Mastery, is an instructional book that is written directly for girls and women.

This book takes readers through a complete chess game against Sophia, a girl who has just learned how to move the chess pieces. In the book’s game, players are asked to choose among a master level move, a good-okay move, and a third that is just plain bad. Then readers await Sophia’s next move! With this book, readers will learn to make smart moves in their own real-life chess games, too!

This book is edited by Woman International Master Alexey Root, 1989 US Women's Chess Champion.

Here's what notable members of the chess community are saying about Lauren's powerful book:

Queen for a Day: The Girl's Guide to Chess Mastery is written in a fun and innovative way to teach chess to beginners. The simulated game against Sophia gives the reader the option to choose the continuation, an unique method that's hard to find elsewhere. It's gripping and instructional, useful for a wide variety of players."
Woman Grandmaster Jennifer Yu, 2019 U.S. Women's Chess Champion

"Lauren is a huge advocate for chess, and she is particularly invested in equalizing the playing field for girls and women in the royal game. This book is a testament to that commitment. Readers play along against "Sophia", a fictional character who helps explain chess strategies and tactics."
Woman Grandmaster Jennifer Shahade, Two-time U.S. Women's Chess Champion, Women's Program Director at US Chess Federation, and popular author of several chess books

"Lauren has produced a novel chess novel!  Highly recommended for beginners."
FIDE Master James Eade, Author of "Chess For Dummies"

"For young girls, diving into a chess world predominantly made up of boys can be intimidating.  As a female chess player, Lauren has walked the walk and talked the talk.  She is a strong player...but more importantly, she's a great teacher with an obvious passion for the game.  I can't think of a better role model for girls getting their start in chess."
Carey Fan, CEO of ChessKid

"Queen for a Day is great for those who are fairly beginner in chess knowledge and want to develop the habit of slowing down to ask key questions every move. Building this skill is essential for improving, and Lauren Goodkind draws upon her coaching experience to bring these questions to life. I enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to those who enjoy a book that is more than just a collection of puzzles."
National Master Elliott Neff, CEO of Chess4life and author of "A Pawn's Journey: Transforming Lives One Move at a Time"

"This book explains the very basic rules of chess in simple, clear language.  There are useful material and rules good even for more advanced players. For those making first steps it is truly important to have precise diagrams, which this book contains. The book is clearly useful, for sure. I really like it!"
Grandmaster Melikset Khachiyan, U.S. National Olympiad Chess Team Coach and Professional Chess Player

"It is high time we had a chess book that encourages young girls to pursue chess. Lauren Goodkind has written just such a work. Her volume, "Queen for a Day: The Girl's Guide to Chess Mastery," combines years of chess teaching and Lauren's passion for the game into a book that is sure to excite girls...and boys to take up the royal game. With easy-to-follow guidance and challenging puzzles, this is a book that will help chess players everywhere to improve their play. I wholeheartedly recommend this book."
Grandmaster Boris Avrukh, Renowned coach and popular author of several chess books

"This is an excellent book to teach chess strategy.  Anybody reading this book seriously and following all the answers, could go from being a novice to an above average player if combined with some active tournament play while practicing the "method"."
Elizabeth Shaughnessy, Founder of the Berkeley Chess School

Queen for a Day is a terrific and easy to follow guide for new players. We love how it asks players to think about the reasons behind moves and why moves are played, something that is fundamental for chess development. We would highly recommend this book to any new student. Bravo to Lauren!
Abel Talamantez and Judit Sztaray, Mechanics' Institute Chess Club in San Francisco

Wonderful

My son-in-law videoed me as my 8 year granddaughter opened this book. She has just joined a school chess club and is only one of 2or 3 girls. She was SOOO excited. She says she has been reading a Lille each day. It is a big hit.
