About The My Best Games in the Sveshnikov (DVD) - Shirov

The Sveshnikov Variation of the Sicilian Defence is one of the sharpest and best-scoring replies to 1.e4. It often gives rise to sharp and complex positions which require precise and inventive play from both sides. Therefore it is tailor-made for Alexei Shirov (FIDE World Cup finalist in 2007) who plays it with both colors and is intimately acquainted with all its tricks and traps.

In more than four hours of video, the genius from Latvia presents and explains his best games in the Sveshnikov from his first experiments in 1992 up to and including his recent successes in 2007.

Shirov discusses typical opening plans for both sides, explains the strategy and tactics in the middlegame and illustrates how to convert advantages in the endgame - and all this in a most entertaining way. A masterful course on one of the most popular openings of our time by one of the best players of our time.

Alexei Shirov was born in Riga the birthplace of world champion Mihail Tal. Shirov studied with the 'Magician from Riga' as a boy and is clearly inspired by him. In the beginning of the 90s, a meteoric rise brought the young Latvian into the world's elite and at 22 he already had an Elo rating of nearly 2750. Since then Shirov has been one of the best players in the world, delighting chess fans with original and amazing ideas.
